Project Overview
In pipe manufacturing, excellent quality is demanded. The manual methods of inspection of ID surface defects, welding groove defects, and OD surface defects are slow and error-prone, resulting in most of the times failure to detect critical defects. Hence, an AI-based vision inspection system was considered to be developed in order to perform a holistic 360-degree inspection of pipes.
Problem Statement:
Manual inspection on pipes is ineffective and fails to detect all forms of defectivity, leading to degraded quality and increasing costs in the product. An automated solution with AI driving was required in order to raise the sensitivity and efficiency in inspection processes.
Solution proposed:
The proposed solution was a customized AI-based vision inspection system. The system consisted of high-resolution cameras with a crawling mechanism to inspect the ID v-groove and surface defects and extra cameras for OD surface defects. This AI-based solution could detect and classify defects in real time, thus significantly reducing inspection time and increasing accuracy.
Impact:
Implementation of the AI-based vision inspection system has brought the following results:
-High Accuracy: defect detection as well as classification;
Improved efficiency in terms of the decrease of time utilized in an inspection and hastening in turning out the manufactured product,
decreased in cost : reduced cost on operation. increased quality control, where quality of output would raise plus its reliability too.
There was an improved process by advanced AI concerning pipe production on quality control as well as its operative efficiency.
